Distinguished Scientist Prof. Cao Thang Dinh Discusses the Future of CO₂ Conversion and Regenerable Electrolyzers

Hanoi, July 17, 2026 – The Center for Materials Innovation & Technology (CMIT) at VinUniversity was honored to host Prof. Cao Thang Dinh, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals at Queen’s University. During his visit, Prof. Dinh delivered an insightful seminar titled Regenerable Electrolyzers: Rethinking Stability in CO₂ Conversion” and discussed the opportunity for partnerships.  

During his presentation, Prof. Dinh addressed the critical bottleneck of long-term durability in CO₂ electrolyzers. While conventional research focuses on preventing catalyst and electrode degradation, Prof. Dinh introduced a paradigm-shifting approach: designing electrolyzers that can be regenerated. By integrating innovative system architectures with targeted chemical and electrochemical recovery strategies, his team demonstrated that high performance can be repeatedly restored after significant degradation, bridging the gap between laboratory success and real-world deployment. 

The talk provided invaluable insights into sustainable technology, showing how resilient, regenerable systems can pave the way for practical, large-scale carbon reduction and renewable energy storage. The seminar with Prof. Cao Thang Dinh attracted great attention and stimulated vibrant discussions among CMIT faculty, researchers and research assistants.

Prof. Cao Thang Dinh is a distinguished figure in the international scientific community. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Laval University in 2014. From 2014 to 2019, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. 

His research focuses on developing electrochemical processes to convert CO₂, water, and renewable electricity into fuels and chemicals. A central theme of his work is addressing the stability challenges that limit the practical deployment of CO₂ electrolysis technologies.  

With over 120 peer-reviewed articles (including more than 30 in Science and Nature family journals), Prof. Dinh has been recognized annually as a Highly Cited Researcher in Chemistry by Clarivate since 2021. He was awarded the Science Breakthrough of the Year 2023 by the Falling Walls Foundation and currently serves as the founding Editor-in-Chief of Cambridge Prisms: Carbon Technologies.
